For clinical use, HSC can be obtained from peripheral blood, bone marrow, and cord blood (UCB). The umbilical cord blood is a valuable source of HSC and an effective alternative for bone marrow transplantation. Haematopoietic stem cell transplant from cord blood was first performed in 1988 and to date 35,000 transplants have been performed.

Several clinical trials have begun to examine the application of cord blood stem cells autologously or allogeneously for the treatment of some nerve, immune, and cardiac abnormalities.

  • Sickle cell disease (sickle cell anemia) is a form of anemia caused by genetic abnormalities in the genes of hemoglobin production, and is usually inherited. It is well known that HSC transplant from cord blood can be used to treat sickle cell disease.
  • Myocardial infarction is usually caused by a blood clot that blocks the flow to some heart muscle. Lack of oxygen will cause cell death, which ends up in the formation of scar tissue that weakens and decreases the functionality of the heart. To date there have been 13 studies using stem cells to treat patients by repairing damage to the heart muscle.
  • Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that causes the beta cells in the pancreas to be damaged. This causes insulin is not produced enough so that it ends up in blood sugar levels are not controlled. Currently, clinical research data recorded 47 studies that examined the treatment of type 1 diabetes using cord blood stem cells

Since it was first reported by the French team Prof. Gluckman, umbilical cord blood has become a legitimate alternative to stem cell transplantation for some indications including malignancy and non-malignant disease.

In the future, increasing the number of HSC in UCB units is important in supporting successful transplantation for adults requiring larger stem cell counts for transplant success.

Some researchers are currently looking for the right and applicable way to increase the number of stem cells in the cord blood unit and how to maintain their true nature.

Greater clinical studies are continuing to better understand and confirm the potential of these valuable cells and to confirm their use for treatment for various indications.
