Is There A Vaccine To Maintain Good Oral And Dental Health?

Roseous.comIs There A Vaccine To Maintain Good Oral And Dental Health? Vaccines are given by injection, oral, or spray to produce immunity against certain diseases. Vaccines can be given from infancy to adulthood. However, did you know that a vaccine to maintain oral hygiene is also available?

Is There A Vaccine To Maintain Good Oral And Dental Health?

Yes, it has been a long time in several countries has done various research in the form of vaccine, which is intended to prevent caries in teeth. Dental caries is the most common dental disorder in the oral cavity, along with periodontal disease. Dental caries is an infectious disease that causes holes in the teeth. The cause is Streptococcus mutans bacteria.

The mechanism of caries occurrence in teeth begins with the formation of plaque of food debris and bacteria attached to the tooth surface, for a long time. The condition then causes the emergence of lactic acid which will lower the pH in the mouth. If left unchecked, may cause enamel erosion resulting in caries in the teeth.

Currently a variety of caries prevention strategies are underway, ranging from oral health education, chemical control and plaque mechanics, fluoride use, as well as pit and fissure sealant applications. Many of these strategies can be widely effective. However, several factors such as economics, culture, habits, and lack of knowledge become obstacles. Of course this affects the high number of cases of dental caries in the community.

In order to fight dental caries that many experienced by the community, then developed a vaccine that is effective and appropriate for applications on oral health of the community. Of course the environment that does not give them regular health care, becomes the main focus.

Development of dental caries vaccine

In India, surveys conducted on schoolchildren show a caries prevalence of about 58 percent. Surveys among US populations show a 45.3 percent incidence in children and 93.8 percent in adults, with both past and present coronal caries.

A large amount of money and time is spent on dental caries handling. Therefore, the prevention and control of dental caries is a major goal in public health. Recently, dental caries vaccine has been developed for the prevention of dental caries.

Research conducted in China is working on a vaccine that can help protect teeth from dental caries. Led by Yan Huimin, a scientist from Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIOV), China, the researchers tested a mixture of proteins to prevent the development of dental caries.

In previous research, these researchers have attempted to protect teeth against caries by combining proteins from the Streptococcus mutans den C-terminal E. Coli-derived recombinant bacteria from flagellin (KF) protein. Although after being tested effective in protecting teeth against caries, found side effects of this fusion of proteins that can cause inflammation.

Efforts to reduce these side effects, the researchers developed KFD2-rPAc, the second generation of their flagellin-rPAc fusion protein. Overall, the protein was shown to maintain a high level of prior protection against caries with minimal side effects.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), dental care remains a major health problem in most industrialized countries. Approximately 60-90 percent of schoolchildren and adults are known to suffer dental caries. So, can be ascertained by the existence of this vaccine, many people will benefit.

There are still many tests that need to be done before the vaccine is ready for use and marketed. However, although this vaccine can help in preventing the occurrence of caries, of course brushing teeth remains an important thing in maintaining healthy teeth and mouth, and certainly visit the dentist periodically.
