Causes of Sudden Death in Productive Age

Roseous.comMost deaths from heart attacks occur in those who are elderly, especially those who suffer from coronary artery disease. However, even those who are of productive age, under 35 years are not a few who experience the same thing. It usually occurs while experiencing severe physical activity, such as exercise and is mostly experienced by men.

The cause of sudden death due to a heart attack in those who are of productive age, can vary. Most often due to heart abnormalities. For various reasons, something causes the heart to beat uncontrollably, which in medical terms is called ventricular fibrillation.

Some of the specific causes of sudden cardiac death that occur, include:

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM)

This condition is usually caused by bloodlines. In this condition, the wall of the heart muscle thickens. Thickened muscles can interfere with the electrical system in the heart, which causes an irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia) that can cause sudden death.

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy

This condition is the most common cause of sudden death in those under 30 years of age. This is an identifiable cause of death in athletes. HCM is often not detected.

Coronary artery abnormalities

There are some individuals who are born with heart arteries (coronary arteries) that are abnormally connected. Arteries become compressed during exercise and do not provide proper blood flow to the heart.

Long QT Syndrome

Heart abnormalities that cause the heartbeat to become chaotic, or beat too fast, which often makes the sufferer faint suddenly. People with QT syndrome have an increased risk of sudden death, and most are of productive age.

Other causes are structural abnormalities of the heart such as heart disease due to congenital defects (congenital abnormalities), and heart muscle abnormalities. Other causes include inflammation of the heart muscle, which can be caused by a virus. In addition to QT syndrome, other disorders such as Brugada syndrome, can also cause sudden death.

Commotio cordis, is a rare cause for sudden death. Can occur due to blunt blows in the chest area. A blow to the chest can trigger ventricular fibrillation, which causes a disturbance in the heart cycle.

Symptoms of a sudden heart attack

There are so many sudden deaths that occur without warning. Here are the indications we need to pay attention to:
  • Unexplained fainting (syncope). If this happens during physical activity, it can be a sign that there is a problem with the heart.
  • The descent of heart defects. A family history.
  • Breathlessness or chest pain can, indicating that you are at risk of sudden death. It can also indicate other health problems, such as asthma.

Who is at risk

Some countries such as Italy do an examination with an electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG), which records electrical signals in the heart in those who are productive. However, this type of screening is expensive and can produce false positive results that can cause concern. For anyone with a family history or risk factors for conditions that cause sudden cardiac death, further screening is recommended.

Should those with heart defects avoid excessive physical / exercise activities?

If you are at risk, talk to your doctor about your physical activity. Can you participate in the sport. For some disorders, such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, it is recommended to avoid competitive sports. If you have an ICD, you should avoid what kind of exercise and talk to your doctor about limiting your activities.
